Perseverance

April 13, 2020

APRIL 13 - APRIL 19

Perseverance

Hey Lightgliders!

I’m Bryce, one of the leaders at Lightglider Academy! The Professor asked me to tell you a little about myself and to share with you one of my character qualities that stands out. Well, I’m from Australia. I am passionate about doing courageous things, such as going on missions to the Yonders, shining light in the darkness, or sharing truth with my friends. I’m not afraid to go and make an impact. Living for something greater than ourselves is the secret to living a life of purpose. But, it’s not always easy.

That is why I would say that one of my most admirable character qualities is perseverance. That’s a big word that simply means to “keep on.” I seek to persevere no matter how hard things get to complete whatever goal or task I’m given. I don’t even think about quitting.

If you seek to learn new things and to make a difference in the lives of others, you will have to persevere. You will have to “keep on” in the midst of challenges.  What is going on in your life right now that requires perseverance?  I encourage you to keep on!

Marlon Investigates Easter

April 10, 2020

Did you know that you are a person of faith, whether you think of yourself as “religious” or not? We all are actually.

We all adhere to a set of beliefs about reality that we cannot prove. And these beliefs impact our values, our ethics, and even our sense of purpose. They affect how we engage the world.

There are people with all kinds of beliefs that cannot be proven. There are people whose beliefs are greatly influenced by their friends. There are people whose beliefs change over time. There are people who have beliefs, but never stop to identify what they are or why they have them.

I have a confession to make. I have been all of these people at one point or another. That is why I am so thankful that the first goal of a Lightglider is respect. We are all on a journey, and we want to respect each other no matter where we are on that journey.

I want to tell you what happened to me that solidified my beliefs.

Years ago at Lightglider Academy, Professor Watts said to me, “Marlon, how do you know that your life matters?”

I had to think. “I’m not really sure Professor, but I know it does. My parents tell me I’m special all the time. I feel it in my heart. And I hear it here at Lightglider Academy. I mean, purpose is one of our core values.”

Then the Professor asked me the question that changed my life. “But, Marlon, how do you know that it is true?”

I didn’t have an answer, at least not one that was solid. “Ok, Professor, you got me. I guess I don’t really know why my life matters.”

Then I decided to challenge him. “But, Professor, do I have to have a reason?  Why can’t I just believe that my life is valuable because I feel it in my heart, and that be enough?”

The Professor looked at me with sadness in his eyes.  “Marlon, you can try to do that. Many people do. Your feelings are very important and you should listen to what they are trying to tell you. But, your feelings come and go. What will happen on the day that you begin to feel insignificant? What if that day turns into weeks or months?”

“Professor,” I muttered, “are you saying that my life is insignificant?”

“Absolutely not, Marlon!” There was no sadness in the Professor’s voice this time, rather a fiery passion. “You are valuable. You are loved. You are significant. You matter!”

I admit, it felt good to hear this from someone I admire so much, but I had to ask my new favorite question. “Professor, how do you know this to be true?”

Professor Watts smiled and said, “Easter.”

Now I was truly confused, but also curious. “Easter! I don’t understand. Are you talking about the holiday where we look for eggs?”

He laughed. “I am. It is also the holiday where we celebrate the most important event that ever happened --the resurrection of Jesus. If this happened, then your sense of value, purpose, and significance rests upon truth.”

Once again, I was confused. “Professor, I don’t understand. How does that event affect my sense of purpose? And, if it does, how can I know that it actually happened?”

And the Professor said to me, “Marlon, investigate Easter and you’ll see.”

I left my conversation with Professor Watts not knowing exactly what to do. I mean, how do I investigate an event that happened 2,000 years ago?  And how could it affect my sense of purpose?  The only thing I knew to do was to look at Jesus; what he did, what he said, and what others said about him. I went to the Lightglider Academy Library to begin my investigation.

And here are some of the things that I found out:

1. Jesus is one of the most influential people in the history of the world.

As I studied his influence on the last 2,000 years, I could not help but conclude that Jesus of Nazareth has had and continues to have a huge impact on the world. Yet, when he was crucified, he did not have but 100 or so followers. And many of these deserted him when he was arrested.

2. Jesus made bold claims about himself and his role in the world.

Jesus claimed to be God and the Savior of the world. And he did it many times. Just look at a few of his quotes.

• “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

• “I and the Father are one.” John 10:30

• “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Claiming to be God is flat out crazy (unless it’s true). But, Jesus is the only person in history who claimed to be God AND has had a major impact on the world.

3. The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of Christianity.

The claim that Jesus died on a cross and three days later was resurrected back to life is the event upon which Christianity rests. If it is true, it validates his teachings, his claim to be God, and his authority to call us to believe in him and receive eternal life.  If it is false, it is the most impactful hoax, whether intended or not, in all of human history.

4. There is strong evidence that the resurrection of Jesus actually happened.

Like any investigation, we have to look at the facts. The following events are considered knowable history by virtually all scholars:

• Jesus was a man who lived in the 1st century and claimed to be God, the promised Messiah.

• People who heard Jesus speak saw him do things that appeared to be miracles.

• Jesus convinced many of his disciples that he was God.

• Jesus died due to the rigors of Roman crucifixion and was buried.

• His death caused his disciples to despair and lose hope.

• Jesus was buried in a tomb that was discovered to be empty just a few days later.

• The disciples and others had overwhelmingly real experiences that they believed were literal appearances of the risen Jesus.

• Because of these experiences, the disciples were transformed from doubters afraid to identify themselves with Jesus to bold proclaimers of his death and resurrection.

• Many of these disciples were killed proclaiming their belief in the message of Jesus’ divinity, death, and resurrection.

As I looked at this evidence, I could not help but think about Jesus’ disciples. The very ones who deserted him at his death actually spent the rest of their lives proclaiming his resurrection. Many of them were even killed for it. Why would they do that if they did not see a risen Jesus? That doesn’t make any sense.

5. If the resurrection happened, then our lives are EXTREMELY valuable.

The death and resurrection of Jesus is evidence that my life is significant. Yours too. If the resurrection is true, then it is proof that I need a savior, that I need to be rescued from my sins. If God cared about me so much that he sent Jesus to die for me, then I am truly valuable. It cost God A LOT to love me. He paid for my life with the blood of Jesus. And the resurrection is the evidence that this story is true.

I am loved. My life is extremely valuable. This is something I need to remember whether I feel it or not. My feelings come and go, but the resurrection proves that I matter. This goes for you too!

Happy Easter, everybody!  And thank you, Jesus!

Easter

Happy Easter Week Lightgliders!

In Lightglider Academy, we go on rescue missions into the Yonders every day. But at Easter, we are reminded of the greatest rescue mission of all time. Even before the world was created, God had a plan to rescue us from sin and brokenness. That plan was and is Jesus. At the cross, Jesus gave up His life knowing that only His blood could pay the penalty of our sins. And on Easter Sunday, God raised Jesus back to life. He is alive! This event is what Easter is all about. Let’s celebrate what He has done for us!

Role Models

March 30, 2020

MARCH 30 - APRIL 5

Role Models

Hey Lightgliders!

Congratulations on learning the five values of a Lightgliders -- purpose, humility, confidence, hope, and love. I get the distinct privilege of introducing our new series for the coming weeks. We will be talking about Role Models and the positive character qualities that they possess.

Now I know what you’re thinking. “Isn’t a role model just really good-looking bread?” And to that I say, “No, that’s a roll model.”  Wow, I just got really hungry.

A role model is someone you can look up to! He or she serves as an example to you for how to live, how to treat people, and how to grow in your faith. I can’t tell you how important it is to have good role models!  One of my first role models ever was Marlon, who hangs out in the Academy Library.  Marlon cares about me and shows me what it looks like to walk with God. Who are some of your role models? It could be a parent, an older sibling, or perhaps a leader in your church. I encourage you to find someone you look up to, watch how to live their lives, and ask them lots of questions. And remember to listen to their answers!

Love

March 23, 2020

MARCH 23 - MARCH 29

Love

Hey Lightgliders!

As Lightgliders, we seek to respect others, rescue Gliddles, and restore the land of Glideon! Hopefully, you know that by now. But do you know why we do these things? Because we value love here. Love motivates each of these goals. We want it to motivate everything we do in life. That’s why it is one of our core values. When we love, we put the needs of others ahead of our own. Unfortunately, our selfishness will continue to try to rule our thoughts and motivations, so we need to be continually reminded to love. The best reminder for me to love is to remember what Jesus did on the cross. He did that for me. And because He chose to love me when I didn’t deserve it, I remember to be grateful and am motivated to love others.

What does it look like to love the people in your life?  Do you offer words of encouragement? Do you serve, give gifts, write notes, smile, hug, share, or listen? There are lots of ways to love others. Love energizes any atmosphere.

Free Resource from Lightgliders

March 20, 2020

To our Lightglider families and community,

We have a free resource for you and your kids.

It is likely that you and your family have been significantly impacted by COVID-19 in one form or another. Schools, businesses, and even churches have been forced to close their doors. I can't remember a time quite like this. Yet, it is not a coincidence that our theme inside of Lightgliders this week is HOPE. No matter how difficult our present day circumstances are, we have hope for the future because of what Jesus did for us on the cross.

Recognizing that many of you are at home throughout the week with your kids for the unforeseeable future, our team at Lightgliders has developed a resource that may help as you look for positive ways to spend the time. We call it "Biblical Breaks."

Lightglider Biblical Breaks
While you are looking for things for your kids to do, check out our free resource, Lightglider Biblical BreaksPurposeful Play When You Need It.

Just visit Lightglider Biblical Breaks and choose from a collection of games and devotional activities to give your kids something fun to do while they encounter life-changing truths from the Bible. You can even download and print application guides, so that your kids may engage in deeper learning or conversation.

As I said on Facebook Live this week, during this time we want to bepractical, prayerful, and full of praise. We want to offer practical resources for you and your family, to beprayerful for our community and world, and to be full of praise knowing that God is still in control of the world He created.

Please feel free to share Lightglider Biblical Breaks with your friends, family, and community. We want this resource to be widely available in the coming days.

"Never stop praying!" ~ I Thessalonians 5:17

All the best,

Hope

March 16, 2020

MARCH 16 - MARCH 22

Hope

Hey Lightgliders!

This week our theme is hope. It’s a small word with a big impact. To live with hope means to look to the future with the expectation that good things are coming.

This is tough to do sometimes, especially if things around us are tough. But, with our faith in Jesus, we always have a reason to live with hope. God promises eternal life and a fully restored world in which we’ll live. He will make everything right again some day. The future is secure. Therefore, we can live with hope!

And, trust me on this, hope is invigorating. It is electrifying. It is powerful! When we live with hope, we will share it with others. And, like a spark, the fire of hope spreads and the future begins to look brighter and brighter to those around you. Think of the Gliddles in the Yonders. Just knowing that Lightgliders are out there gives them hope that the future will be bright. This is the power of hope.

I try to wake up each day with hope--with the expectation that the day will be new, exciting, and meaningful. I'm telling you, living with hope makes a difference!

Confidence

March 9, 2020

MARCH 9 - MARCH 15

Confidence

Hey Lightgliders!

We’re talking about the Lightglider value of confidence this week. Confidence comes from a strong belief that you are known and loved. We can live with confidence because of how much God knows and loves us! How can we be so sure of this? Because of the cross! God sent Jesus to die on the cross to pay for our sins and purchase back our lives. Do you realize what this means? It means that we never have to question our value, no matter what anyone says or thinks about us. We are known and greatly loved by the Creator of the universe!

Never forget how valuable you are. You always have a reason to be confident because of what Jesus did for you. Our confidence does not come from our abilities, our friends, or our moral performance. These things are not dependable. Our confidence comes from God's immeasurable love for us, which was showcased through Jesus at the cross! When we understand that our confidence can be anchored upon the unchanging rock of God's love, we will walk with the courage and boldness necessary to shine in dark places, to stand up for what is right, and to repent when we make mistakes.

Glide On!

Santiago

Things to Think About

• Read Ephesians 3:10-12 in the Bible. What does our faith in Christ give us?

• How can a knowledge of God’s love affect our confidence?

• Where does your confidence come from?

• What is an example of a time when you stood up for what was right?

Humility

March 2, 2020

MARCH 2 - MARCH 8

Humility

Hey Lightgliders!

This week we are discussing the Lightglider value of humility. We learned last week about purpose - how God has created each of us uniquely and in His image. Even though each of us are created to shine like stars in the universe, we must come to understand that we are not perfect. The sin and selfishness that began in the Garden of Eden carries on today in every human heart. It causes division, brokenness, and strife. Admitting our need for God’s love and forgiveness requires humility. To live with humility means to acknowledge that we are weak and that we need others. We cannot depend on our own talents, accomplishments, or even our good behavior. These things will fail us, as they will never be able to pay for our sin. We have to depend on God and on His love for us. Only with humble hearts is this even possible. As we live with humility, we are able to take our focus off ourselves, receive God’s love, and truly focus on the needs of others.

When you go on enough Yonders missions, you will be ready for one filled with puzzles. One of these is called “Keep Out!” That’s a good name for it because those who are proud or unwilling to fail should keep out. To complete it, you will need humility. Stay focused on your missions to the Yonders. You will fail at some. You will succeed at some. But, in all of them, stay humble!

Glide On!

Nisha

Things to Think About

• Read Philippians 2:3-5 in the Bible. What kind of attitude did Jesus have?

• What does it mean to be humble?

• In what ways do you take an interest in others?

• What is one area of weakness where you need God’s help?

• What are ways to point others to Jesus?

In-Game Announcements

• Kwan’s Game Tip of the Week: Keep Out!

It’s Kwan again! I wanted to give you some tips for taking on this mission. We’re sending you back into the abandoned building where lots of Machines have taken up residence. There’s a defense jammer installed there, so if you don’t have a Gliddle with you, you won’t be able to battle Machines! You have to use your wits and careful gliding to get you out of some sticky situations!

There’s a powerful Machine at the end of the mission. Concentrate on avoiding its blasts and let the Gliddles you find do their work!

Don’t forget to check for secret areas; the overgrowth in the building might have opened up new pathways!

Purpose

February 24, 2020

FEBRUARY 24 - MARCH 1

Purpose

Hey Lightgliders!

Purpose is one of the five core values of a Lightglider. We want to live with absolute certainty that our lives are extremely valuable. But how do we know this is true? It comes from the truth that God made us in His image. Because of this, our lives have worth and dignity that no one can take away. If the Creator of the universe took time to create you, then guess what. Your life matters!

To live with purpose means to live every day with the belief that you are valuable and that you can make a difference. In Lightglider Academy, we rescue Gliddles, clear the blight, and seek to help any way we can. Look around you. The world is in need and you were uniquely created to make an impact!

Each day provides us a new opportunity to live an adventure filled with purpose!

Glide On!

Five Values

February 17, 2020

FEBRUARY 17 - FEBRUARY 23

Five Values

Hey Lightgliders!

I just got back from the Yonders and was talking with Santiago in the courtyard about the Lightglider values -- why we do what we do! When I’m in Timberlands Treetops, clearing blight and battling Machines, it’s important for me to remember the values I want to live by. The five values of a Lightglider are purpose, humility, confidence, hope, and love. I want these values to affect how I think, how I act, and how I behave. They are especially important to remember in times of uncertainty and pressure, like when I’m battling a Clampneck Machine in the Yonders! I’m excited for us to talk about these values over the coming weeks.

Most every family, community, and culture lives by a set of values. Lightgliders seek to live with five values: purpose, humility, confidence, hope, and love. And they are supported by a biblical worldview:

• Purpose: Because God created us in His image (Genesis 1:27), our lives are valuable. They have purpose.

• Humility: No one is perfect; we all fall short of God’s moral standard of goodness (Romans 3:23). A deep understanding of this produces a life of humility.

• Confidence: Knowing that God loves us and that Jesus paid for our sins at the cross despite our shortcomings generates a strong sense of confidence (Ephesians 2:8-10). We are greatly loved by the only One who matters!

• Hope: Because the future is in God’s hands and that He promises to restore the brokenness, we can always looks ahead with hope believing that good things are coming. When we live with hope, we give hope to others (Romans 15:13).

• Love: With Jesus’ example as our example, we seek to love. Such love is not a feeling. It is a choice that inspires action by putting the needs of others before our own (John 15:13). This is exactly what Jesus did at the cross!

Just like a good seed properly nourished helps to produce a beautiful tree, good values help to produce beautiful lives.

Glide On!

Bryce

Things to Think About

Read Matthew 7:17-20 in the Bible. How does the Bible say we will know a tree? How can we be known by the “fruit” we produce?

• What are values and why are they important?

• What are some examples of values?

• What are your family’s core values?

In-Game Announcements

• Compete in this week’s BRAND NEW Game of the Week, Impossible Glider Challenge. Challenge your family members and see who can get the highest score!

• On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week, you can meet one of the Lightglider Mods, Norman Snowman Cook. He’ll be in the Courtyard at 5:30pm EST/4:30pm CST telling jokes and giving out prizes!

• Did you know you can decorate a Sticker Page and send it to a friend? Try one out on the front page today!

• Watch the Spark video in green called What’s A Value? and the Prayer video in orange called Thank You For My Family.

• Bryce’s Timberlands Treetops game tip: Hey, Lightglider! It’s Bryce. One of our missions is to head out to the Timberlands and explore the treetops! There are lots of dangerous Machines up there, but I know you’ll battle them with ease! A great tactic to deal with faster Machines is to “kite!” When a Machine charges you, start slowly backing away, firing behind you as you go. The Machine will try to chase you, but they won’t be able to catch you. It’s like you’re stringing along a kite behind you! Use this tactic on many of the smaller Machines. You’ll come out on top! Glide on!

Restore

Hey Lightgliders!

As a Lightglider, you are sent on missions from Lightglider Academy to restore the land of Glideon. To restore means to bring something back to the way it was meant to be. Glideon was not meant to be covered in this dark mysterious substance that we call blight. No, it was meant to be beautiful and full of purpose. When you clear the blight, you are bringing Glideon back to what it was intended to be!

The Scriptures tell us that one day God will fully restore this broken world. This is a day that we all can look forward to with hope. In the meantime, Lightgliders seek to restore the beauty, purpose, joy, and dignity of this world and everyone in it. In doing so, we serve as signposts of what is to come. A signpost is like a great big billboard telling everyone who passes by what they can look forward to. When we carry out deeds of compassion and justice, we give the world a glimpse of what is to come. God’s light shines through us to give the world hope.

Things to Think About

Read Acts 3:20-21 in the Bible. Where will final restoration come from?

• What does it mean to restore something?

• What are some things in your world that are broken and are in need of restoration?

• What can you do through your words or actions to help?

• What are things that break God’s heart and break your heart?

• Nisha’s Emerald Fields game tip: Hello, I’m Nisha! I serve in a lot of places at Lightglider Academy, but I mostly try to help the other leaders handle the blight problem in the Yonders. And this mission is all about restoring the land! The Emerald Fields in the Yonders are usually so beautiful, but they’ve been taken over by blight. My tip for you is to open up enough room in the blight so that you can dodge Machine attacks. The Emerald Fields are home to many green Gliddles, and to use their power correctly, you’ll have to get up close to Machines! Patience is the key to defeating Machines and clearing blight. Remember, if you run out of RES, come back to Lightglider Academy and give out Boosts to recharge! I’ve heard that there’s a Machine that’s very hard to get to… Maybe the fences in this area don’t extend the whole way around the Fields?

Rescue

FEBRUARY 3 - FEBRUARY 9

Rescue

Hey Lightgliders!

The three goals of a Lightglider are Respect, Rescue, and Restore. I want to take a moment to talk about Rescue. As Lightgliders, we have the awesome responsibility of going on missions to rescue the Gliddles from danger. We put on armor, glide into the Yonders, and free them from the toxic blight and the control of the Machines. Rescuing others from dangerous situations requires courage and strength of character. Remember that!

Did you know that God is a rescuer? Did you know that He will stop at nothing to rescue us?

If you’ve ever made a truly selfish decision or disobeyed God’s standards in any way, then you need to be rescued. The hard truth is that we all have done this. We all need to be rescued from our sin, which separates us from God, causes pain to others, and destroys our lives.

God sent Jesus to earth to rescue us from this danger. Jesus lived the perfect life, a life that we are incapable of living. And, when Jesus died on the  cross, He paid the penalty of our sin. He was the perfect sacrifice. When He came back to life three days later, Jesus defeated death for us, so that we can be forgiven and live in a relationship with God forever.

Through Jesus, God rescues us from sin and death!

Things to Think About

• Why do we need to be rescued?

• How does our sin and selfishness hurt us and those around us?

• How can we be rescued?

• Have you been rescued?

Respect

January 27, 2020

JANUARY 27 - FEBRUARY 2

Respect

Hey Lightgliders!

The first goal of a Lightglider is to respect. We seek to show respect toward others and toward ourselves. But, how do we do that? What does that even mean?

When we respect, we are acknowledging worth. You and everyone you meet is worthy of respect because we were created by God and in His image. We show respect in the way we treat people and in the way we treat ourselves. Therefore, we should seek to care about everyone we meet. We should also seek to care for our minds, hearts, and bodies.

Whether it’s your best friend or someone you don’t get along with very well, choosing to show respect is what Lightgliders strive to do. So, when you’re in Mission Control, the Courtyard, the Library, or the Innovation Lab, look for ways to show respect to the other Lightgliders.

Three Goals

January 20, 2020

JANUARY 20 - JANUARY 26

Three Goals

Hey Lightglider!

Lightgliders live with great purpose because we have three overarching goals that never change: RESPECT, RESCUE, and RESTORE! We respect ourselves and each other at Lightglider Academy. We rescue Gliddles from the clutches of the Machines. And we restore the land from the blight. A goal is something that you are trying to achieve. Setting goals is important because they give us something to strive for! They also help guide how we spend our time. When we set a goal, we commit to think and act in ways that will help us reach it.

By the way, did you notice that there is a Yonders mission in the mobile app this week? Check out the Game of the Week! How many Gliddles can you rescue?

The Far Greater Story

January 13, 2020

JANUARY 13 - JANUARY 19

The Far Greater Story

Hey Lightglider!

The goals of a Lightglider are to respect, rescue, and restore. We seek to RESPECT those around us. We go on missions from Lightglider Academy to RESCUE the Gliddles from the clutches of the Machines. And we clear the blight to RESTORE the land to its original beauty, purpose, and goodness. Did you know that this fun gameplay points to a far greater, far more important story? It points to the true story of God’s love for us.

The Bible reveals God as the ultimate respecter, rescuer, and restorer. He RESPECTS us as His image-bearers by creating us with dignity and purpose. He RESCUES us from the grip of our sin and selfishness through the death and resurrection of Jesus. And He promises to RESTORE us and our broken world one day so that we may live forever with Him. This is the Far Greater Story.

Made to Shine

January 6, 2020

JANUARY 6 - JANUARY 12

Made to Shine

Hey Lightglider!

We’re so glad you’re here. We - the other Lightglider leaders and me - want you to know that you were MADE TO SHINE!

God created you uniquely. No one has your unique interests, personality, and talents. To shine means to love God and to love others in the way that only you can. With a lot of darkness in the world, this can feel like a big responsibility. But like a candle in a dark tunnel, even the smallest light can be blinding. If you’ve been to Machine Bunker in the Yonders, you know what I mean!

Jesus is the true light of the world. With Him as our example, we will shine like stars in the heavens and make an impact on the world. Let’s reflect His love and light everywhere we go this year!
