The Cross

October 12, 2020

OCTOBER 12 - OCTOBER 18

THE CROSS

Hey Lightgliders!

Did you know that the Far Greater Story is not a fairy tale or a myth? All we have talked about over the last few weeks--Creation, Rebellion, Redemption, and Restoration--is absolutely true. It was proven true by an event that we can investigate--the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Think about that. Something happened in human history that proves that the story of God’s love for you is true.

As a refresher, here are all the parts of the story:

• Creation tells us how this world became a reality. God created.

• Rebellion explains why there is suffering and brokenness in this world. It is because we and everyone else are sinners. Sin has consequences and requires judgment.

• Redemption shares how Jesus paid the penalty for our sin at the cross and bought back our lives.

• Restoration gives us insight into why our future is bright. Jesus will restore all that is broken, and God will live with His people forever.

• The Cross proves that this is no fairy tale. This is a true story based upon facts.

Christianity rests upon this event. If Jesus did not die on a cross and come back to life, then our faith in Him is only wishful thinking. But the truth is that He did die. He was buried in a tomb and He rose again, defeating death and conquering sin on our behalf. This is what we call the Gospel. Gospel simply means “good news,” and the good news that we have in Jesus is that through His death, burial, and resurrection we can be forgiven and live with God forever.

“I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said.” - 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NLT)

Gratefulness

October 5, 2020

OCTOBER 5 - OCTOBER 11

GRATEFULNESS

Hey Lightgliders!

We have recently been looking at the final chapter of The Far Greater Story known as Restoration. We have learned that Jesus will come back one day and restore all that is broken. Because of this, we can live with hope. Hope is a feeling of trust that the future is bright. And, because of this hope for tomorrow, we can be grateful today.

Being grateful is a practice we MUST put into place in our daily lives. Yes, that’s right. We can practice gratefulness. I’ll show you how. Just think of three things you are grateful for.

Ok, now do this again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next.

You get the idea! Thank God for these things. Everything good comes from Him.

And, if you can’t think of anything to be grateful for (which I find hard to believe), look back to the cross, and look ahead to the future restoration. Because Jesus paid for our sins on the cross and promises to make things right one day, there are always reasons to be grateful.

So, what are you grateful for? Allow me to tell you what I’m grateful for. Maybe that will help.  I am grateful to God for waking me up this morning, giving me a place to live, providing people in my life who care about me, and showing me the beauty of creation - blue skies, green grass, and a warm sun. I’m also grateful for my guitar and for music in general. I am grateful for soccer, and for corny jokes. I could do this gratefulness thing all day! It is so grate….I mean, great!

Hope

September 28, 2020

SEPTEMBER 28 - OCTOBER 4

HOPE

Hey Lightgliders!

This week we are talking about hope. To live with hope means to look to the future with the expectation that good things are ahead.

This is tough to do sometimes, especially if the circumstances around us today are difficult. But, we always have a reason to live with hope because of God’s promises to His children. He promises a future restoration--He will make everything right some day. He also promises eternal life--we will live with Him forever! The future is secure. Jesus proved it by defeating death. We can live with hope!

And, trust me on this, hope is invigorating. It is electrifying. It is powerful! When we live with hope, it is shared with others. And, like a spark, the fire of hope spreads and the future actually begins to look brighter and brighter to those around you. For example, think of the Gliddles in the Yonders. Just knowing that Lightgliders are out there gives them hope that their future will be bright. This is the power of hope.

I try to wake up each day with hope--with the expectation that the best is yet to come. And, because of Jesus, I know this is true. I'm telling you, living with hope makes a difference!

Glide On!

Restoration

September 21, 2020

SEPTEMBER 21 - SEPTEMBER 27

RESTORATION

Hey Lightgliders!

We’ve been looking at the Far Greater Story this summer. We’ve learned about Creation, Rebellion, and Redemption. Now it’s time for the final act--Restoration! Every good story has a BIG ending. Well, the Far Greater Story has the BIGGEST ending that actually leads to a new beginning. This is the one part of the Far Greater Story that we have yet to experience fully. It will happen some time in the future, and we can look forward to it with great anticipation!

To restore something means to bring it back to its original condition. This is what God will do with our broken world when Jesus comes back. God has redeemed His children through Jesus, but we still experience the consequences of sin and rebellion in our world today. Jesus has promised us that He will return and make right all that has gone wrong. This is what “Restoration” is all about. Scripture tells us that there will be no more pain, or crying, or suffering for those who have placed their faith in Jesus.

Until that day comes, we can work to restore the world around us in small ways. Every word of truth that we speak and every act of love that we do in His name points to this future restoration. When we shine light in the darkness, we are a signpost of what is to come.

Courage

September 14, 2020

SEPTEMBER 14 - SEPTEMBER 20

COURAGE

Hey Lightgliders!

How is your new school year going? We have been discussing The Far Greater Story of God’s love for us in recent weeks. We are currently learning about redemption and how God bought back our lives with the blood of Jesus. As we understand this truth, we can live with great confidence in God’s never ending love.

And, when we are confident, then we can show courage!  To be courageous is to be brave. To take risks. To initiate. To try new things. To do hard things. To not be afraid of failing. We can be courageous because our confidence comes from God’s love for us, and not from anything else!

As Lightgliders, we will not shrink back from difficulties or danger. We will not run away from opportunities to help those in need.

Be courageous today, Lightgliders! Remember that you are never alone. Nothing can separate you from God’s love.

Confidence

September 7, 2020

SEPTEMBER 7 - SEPTEMBER 13

CONFIDENCE

Hey Gliders!

If we understand Redemption, which was last week’s theme, we will grow in Confidence, which is this week’s theme. Confidence is one of the five values of a Lightglider. It comes from a strong belief that you are both fully known AND fully loved. We can live with confidence because of the cross! At the cross, Jesus had to die because of our sin. At the cross, Jesus was glad to die because of God’s love for us. You see, friends, God created us and knows everything about us, both the good and the bad. We cannot hide our sin or our beauty from God. At the cross, Jesus paid the penalty for our sin. It is the proof that God knows us fully and loves us radically.

Do you realize what this means? It means that we never have to question our value, no matter what anyone says or thinks about us. We are greatly loved by the Creator of the universe!

Never forget how valuable you are. Never lose your confidence in God’s love for you. If you do, remember what happened at the cross. It is the ultimate reminder that our confidence does not come from our abilities, our friends, or our behaviors. These things are not dependable. No, our confidence comes from God's love. And His love is never changing.

When we live confidently in His love, we will walk with the courage and boldness necessary to shine in dark places, to stand up for what is right, and to repent when we make mistakes.

Redemption

August 31, 2020

AUGUST 31 - SEPTEMBER 6

REDEMPTION

Hey Lightglider!

Continuing in The Far Greater Story, we have come to its climax, known as Redemption. To redeem something means to buy it back. Remember that God created everything and called it good. This is why there is dignity in the world and within everyone in it. We have rebelled against God’s standard of goodness. This is called sin. And, because of our sin, we are separated from God. Without the next part of the story, we are left without hope.

But God, in His goodness, didn’t leave us hopeless! He sent His Son Jesus to redeem us. When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the penalty for our sin. He bought us back! He made a way for us to be restored to God and to live with Him forever! This is what it means to be redeemed. This is the heart of The Far Greater Story and the proof that God loves us.

Forgiveness

August 24, 2020

AUGUST 24 - AUGUST 30

Forgiveness

Hey Lightglider!

We have been learning about The Far Greater Story in recent weeks. All of Lightgliders seeks to point to this all-important story. We talked about how God is good and has created all things good. However, we have rebelled against Him and His standard for goodness. This is called sin. It causes destruction and separates us from God. It is the reason the world has so many problems. Once we recognize that we have rebelled against God, we have the opportunity to be repentant. To repent means to turn away from sin and turn to God, and it requires humility. The Bible tells us to repent of our sins so that they may be wiped away. When God wipes away our sin, that is an act that we call forgiveness. God forgives us of our sin and puts us in a right relationship with Him. With God’s forgiveness, we are free from the penalty of our sin. And when we understand that God is willing to forgive us even when we don’t deserve it, we can forgive others as well!

Humility

August 17, 2020

AUGUST 17 - AUGUST 23

Humility

Hey Lightgliders!

This week we are discussing the Lightglider value of humility. We learned last week about Rebellion, the second “chapter” of a biblical worldview. Even though God has uniquely created each of us to shine like stars in the universe, we have rebelled against His commands to love Him and love others. The sin and selfishness that began in the Garden of Eden continues today in our hearts and causes division, brokenness, and strife.

To acknowledge our sin and rebellion against God requires humility. To live with humility means to view yourself in light of God’s goodness and perfection. When we do this, we realize how far short we fall and how much we need Him. Therefore, only through humility will we live in dependence upon God’s love.

Only with humble hearts can we take our focus off ourselves, acknowledge God’s greatness, and truly be able to focus on the needs of others.

Spotlights #2

August 15, 2020

It's time to spotlight some Lightgliders who have been shining brightly in the Academy.  Congratulations, Silas Swift Peppercorn and Pearl Snowflake Strider: You are in the Spotlight and will receive a Shining Spotlight Glider and RES Head to use this week!

What a radiant glow!

Silas is a great encourager, having positive conversations about God and reminding all of us that He created us uniquely and for a purpose. Silas said, "I thank our Creator for how He made me." We should wake up saying this every day. Thanks Silas!

Pearl has also been a great friend to others inside Lightgliders this week. She offered prayer and lots of boosts to other Lightgliders needing encouragement this week. Way to be a light, Pearl!

Silas and Pearl have done a tremendous job of RESPECTING God, themselves, and others inside the Academy. Well done!

Just like Silas and Pearl, you too can be in the Spotlight and receive the Shining Spotlight Glider and RES Head to wear. Keep shining in all you do in Lightglider Academy -- join the community events, show respect to other Lightgliders, create amazing postcards, rescue Gliddles, restore blight, lead other Lightgliders in a game you made up, or just be a positive influence to others. There are lots of ways to shine!

Glide on!
